This game absolutely guzzled quarters, with players blowing their entire allowances or paper route money just to get a chance to take on the neighborhood pro – it’s true I’ve seen it happen. When Street Fighter II: The World Warrior released into the noisy game halls of the world it was an absolute revolution for the competitive fighting game scene, transforming it entirely overnight. You know we have to give some love to the original, and for this one, we’re going way back to the original arcade version. And really, can you imagine a world without Cammy? 6 – Street Fighter II: The World Warrior Of course, you can’t call a game The New Challengers without introducing more fighters and this version brought the roster to 16 total fighters from the previous twelve. Playing this version felt like a love letter to fans who had mastered the previous versions as Capcom packed-in tons of tweaks to help you refine your game further like combo trackers, a new scoring system as well as balances to the gameplay to make it a bit more precise in many aspects. The final version of Street Fighter II to release on 16-bit consoles, Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers feels like what we typically call a ‘definition edition’ today. 7 – Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
But the real legacy move here is that Street Fighter II’: Special Champion Edition was the first fighting game to support the new 6-button Genesis controller because Street Fighter with a three-button pad is no Street Fighter at all.
That hook ended up being a new game mode based on the SNES version of Hyper Fighting. But when Sega saw that the game was also coming to the Super Nintendo they demanded that Capcom give the Genesis version a unique hook to make it standout. Both companies were pushing their consoles as hard as possible, especially when it came to trying to get big third-party games to come to their systems and in 1992 none was bigger than Street Fighter II. If Street Fighter’s biggest rivalry is Ken VS Ryu, then the game company equivalent (at least in the early ’90s) has got to be Nintendo VS. 8 – Street Fighter II’: Special Champion Edition So why does it end up so low on this list? Well, Capcom decided to charge a whopping $40 for this port! That’s a lot to pay for a game from 1991 in 2017 and not at all in line with every other modern version of Street Fighter II. And really, it’s a pretty solid port of the Ultra Street Fighter II, it runs at a good clip, has nice HD visuals, and even adds in new fighters (the final challengers if you will). 9 – Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengersįrom an ancient Game Boy game to the most recent version of Street Fighter II released in one go! Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers is a Nintendo Switch exclusive and one of the first games to release for the console. Oh and it supports the link-cable which immediately makes it a favorite of ours. Still, though, it’s pretty fun to go back to, especially if you’re a Street Fighter II pro, just for a laugh. Street Fighter II for the Game Boy is definitely an ambitious game, trying to pack in as much from the arcade version into an 8-bit handheld from 1989, a handheld that only has two-buttons! As a result, this version of Street Fighter II plays a lot more methodical and slowly than fans may be used to. Let’s kick things off with a version of Street Fighter II that would definitely get an A for effort but isn’t quite on the same level as its brethren. That’s because February 6th, 1991 was the day that we first got the chance to play Street Fighter II in arcades! That’s right, Street Fighter II is 30 years old and we’re celebrating this legendary fighting game in today’s Top 10! Now Capcom has been famous (or notorious) for re-releasing Street Fighter II over the years, which makes it perfect for today’s list!
